Open source approach to industrial controls

Just Hatched
I've been researching a number of PLCs as industrial control solutions and have sort of hate them. The gist is that I'm looking to do multi-axis camming and motion control. PLCs like schneider's MODICON 292 seem to have great motion capability for stuff like this, but they have really terrible and outdated interfacing technology. Everything's broken into separate software packages to buy. Its siloed and dependent on a single companies support and release schedule. These are just several of the r

I would much prefer to peruse an open source methodology. Ie, find a controller, load it with the best library's for motion control, Linux ROS, a deployment technology like AWS Greengrass, a webserver, and a PWA for an interface.

Anyone here have any experience or reference for an open source automation project like this?

All ideas welcome.
