I'll start by saying I am a mechanical engineer that knows very, very little about the IoT world. Please forgive my ignorance 
My family has a ranch back home where my parents have a deer feeder set up to watch deer in the evenings. It's only about 20 yards from the back porch. The feeder is set up with a timer (just like the one linked below) where, at preset times, the timer switches on an electric motor that slings out the corn. I'm looking to learn more about IoT, so I thought a cool project may be to create a makeshift mobile app that could control this feeder from the back porch (sometimes they eat all of the corn and wander off prematurely). Any suggestions on how to go about that?
